Importing Vehicles from Overseas

These steps must be followed to comply with CBSA’s regulations of importing commercial or recreation vehicles into Canada:
  • The first step is to check www.riv.ca to ensure the vehicle is admissible into Canada
  • The vehicle must be 15 years old or older; anything newer is not admissible into Canada
  • The vehicle meets the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA) requirements
  • The vehicle meets the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) regulations by ensuring the vehicle is clean and free of soil
  • Submit required documents to CBSA at first point of entry into Canada
  • Pay applicable taxes, RIV fee, duty, and excise taxes

  • Ocean Bill of Lading

Importing Vehicles from USA

These steps must be followed to comply with CBSA’s regulations of importing commercial or recreation vehicles into Canada:
  • The first step is to check www.riv.ca to ensure the vehicle is admissible into Canada
  • Meet US Customs Border and Protection (CBP) documentation requirements
  • An export filing document must be filed on the US CBP Automated Export Services (AES)
  • Please note that AES filing must be done by a US customs broker or freight forwarding company
  • All documents need to be submitted to CBP 72 hours prior to export
  • Ensure the car is clean and without soil to meet the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) regulations

All original documents are required when crossing the border
